Newer Homes, Much Wider Openings

A lot of Carmel Valley construction is newer, and newer construction here tends to favor multi-panel sliding door systems that open most of the back wall of the house rather than a single standard slider. That is a great feature for how the house lives day to day, but it also puts the opening well outside the range conventional screen doors are made for — most stock sliding screens top out well short of what these door systems actually measure. It is one of the more common reasons a newer home here has gone years without any screen at all on that wall.

Made to the Actual Width of Your Slider

Phantom is measured and built to the specific width of the opening in front of it, not assembled from a handful of pre-made panel sizes. A single Phantom screen can span widths that a stock screen door simply does not come in, which is usually the reason these openings have gone without a screen at all up to now. It rolls into one housing at the side of the track, so a wide opening does not mean a wide, bulky door parked across it either.

Published Prices, Measured to Your Opening

Our Phantom prices are published rather than held back for an appointment: $795 installed for a single door up to 48 inches, $1,495 for a double up to 96 inches, and a quote after measuring for anything wider. That is different from a conventional screen door, which is priced off a size chart because it is manufactured in a fixed set of sizes to begin with. With a wide multi-panel slider, there usually is not a size chart that applies anyway, so the measure visit is genuinely not an extra step so much as the only real way to price the job at all.

What it costs

We publish our Phantom prices instead of making you sit through an appointment to hear one. A Phantom Legacy single door is $795 installed on an opening up to 48 inches wide. A double Phantom — two units meeting in the middle, which is what most French door and patio openings take — is $1,495 installed on an opening up to 96 inches. Phantom XL for wide multi-panel openings up to 15 feet, and motorized patio screens up to 40 feet, are quoted after we measure, because those openings vary too much to price off a chart. Service or repair on a retractable door already in place is $195 plus parts. Those are installed prices, not the cost of a unit shipped to your door. Phantom warranties every part of the unit except the mesh, and we warranty our labor for one year. See every Phantom model and price.

Timeline

The measure visit is usually scheduled within a few days of booking. A standard-color single or double door is typically ready in about a week after that; because Carmel Valley openings run wide, a lot of jobs here fall into the XL category, which runs closer to four weeks, and a special color order takes about eight weeks. If anyone offers a custom retractable door measured and installed within a couple of days, that is the measure visit they are describing, not the finished install. It is worth planning around the four-week window rather than the one-week figure if your slider is on the larger side.

Installed by the Same People Who Will Service It

We are a mobile business covering San Diego County every week, so the crew that installs your Phantom door is the one you would call if it ever needed attention later. For comparison, a standard sliding screen door service runs $159 and a new conventional sliding door runs $395 to $595 — a Phantom door for a wide slider is a different product entirely, built to the opening rather than picked off a size chart. If you have other, more standard-sized sliders or entry doors on the property that just need repair, we can look at those on the same visit. 4. We install, and you are set for service on future visits.

What neighbors say

“Alex was a true craftsman. He made sure my new screen door slid and moved perfectly, and considering he had to make it fit French doors from the 1980s I’m sure it was a challenge!”

Questions About Wide Sliders in Carmel Valley

Do you work on newer multi-panel sliding doors?

Yes — wide multi-panel sliders are one of the more common reasons people in Carmel Valley call us, since conventional screen doors are not made in those widths.

Why not just buy a bigger conventional screen door?

Because conventional screen doors are only made up to a certain width, and a lot of Carmel Valley sliders are wider than that. Phantom is built to the actual width of your opening instead of the nearest stock size.

How wide can a Phantom screen go?

Wider than a conventional screen door, which is exactly why it fits multi-panel sliders that stock options do not. The measure visit tells us the exact width and what that means for the build and timeline.

Can the frame be color matched to our door?

Yes — color matching is part of what we go over at the measure visit. A standard color keeps the timeline around a week after measuring; a special color order takes about eight weeks since it is built to order.
