Santee heat is hard on window screens

Santee sits far enough inland that the sun and the dry heat do more damage to a window screen than salt air ever will. Fiberglass mesh that’s been baking in a south- or west-facing window for a few summers goes brittle and turns a dull, chalky gray. Push a finger against it and it doesn’t just dent — it tears.

The frame takes a beating too. Aluminum warps slightly from repeated heat cycles, and once a frame bows even a little, the mesh works itself loose from the spline groove and starts to sag or pop out at the corners. East county wind kicks up a lot of fine dust as well, and that dust loads into the mesh weave and into window and door tracks, which makes screens look dirty and doors drag even when nothing is actually broken.

Re-screening or a new screen — what Santee homes usually need

Most of the time the aluminum frame is still straight and just needs new mesh set into it. That’s a re-screen: $45 for anything under 20 inches, $65 for the common 20-inch-to-50-inch range, and $85 for anything larger.

If the frame itself is bent, warped, or the corners have pulled apart, we build a new screen and frame on site instead: $59 for a small window, $89 for a midsize screen, $119 for anything extra-large, and $169 for casement windows with a lip frame, which take more fitting.

How we set the mesh — spline, not staples

Every screen we build or repair is spline-set: the mesh is stretched over the frame and rolled into a groove with a rubber spline cord, the same way it’s done at the factory. We don’t staple mesh to a frame. Staples pull through aluminum and leave gaps at the corners. A properly spline-set screen holds tension evenly around the whole perimeter, which is why it lies flat and doesn’t billow in the wind.

Want a stronger mesh while we’re there?

If you’ve got a dog or cat that leans on screens, or you just want something more durable than standard fiberglass, we can set pet-resistant mesh, solar mesh, or fine no-see-um mesh instead of the standard weave. It’s a flat $30 upgrade per window screen, $60 per screen door, on top of whichever service you’re already getting.

One visit, and the minimum works in your favor

There’s a $159 minimum on any service call, but it’s applied straight to the work — it isn’t a trip charge stacked on top of the repair price. In practice that means if you’ve only got one small screen that needs fixing, you’re already at or near the minimum, so it’s worth pulling every screen in the house that’s torn, sagging, or just old and doing them all in the same visit instead of calling us back three separate times.

Window Screen Repair in Santee — Common Questions

How much does window screen repair cost in Santee?

Re-screening an existing frame runs $45 to $85 depending on size, and a full new screen with frame runs $59 to $169. Screen doors are priced separately. See full pricing for every size and option.

What’s the difference between re-screening and a new screen?

Re-screening replaces just the mesh in a frame that’s still straight and sound. A new screen means we build the whole frame fresh, which is what you need when the old frame is bent, cracked, or the corners have separated.

What if my screen frame is corroded?

If there’s any corrosion in the frame at all, we recommend replacing the frame along with the mesh. Corrosion doesn’t stop on its own, and a patched-up corroded frame won’t hold a spline for long anyway.

Do I need to be home for the whole appointment?

You need to be home to let us in and to check the finished screens, but most of the work happens in the driveway or on a worktable outside, so it doesn’t take over your day.

Can you match odd or custom window sizes?

Yes. We measure and build the frame on site rather than pulling a pre-made screen off a shelf, so oddball or older window sizes aren’t a problem.

Do you carry pet-resistant or solar mesh?

Yes, both are available as a flat $30 upgrade per window screen. Just ask for it when you book.
