La Jolla has a problem most of the county doesn’t: the windows are the point. Ocean-view glass, wide picture windows, sliders that open onto a bluff — and a screen sitting in front of any of them is a compromise between keeping bugs out and keeping the view you paid for.
That is a real decision, not a sales line, and it comes down to mesh. Standard fiberglass is the most visible. Fine no-see-um mesh is tighter and darkens the view further. Solar mesh cuts glare and heat but reads darker still from inside. On a west-facing ocean window we will usually talk you out of the heaviest mesh and into the lightest one that solves your actual problem.

Oversized windows and what they cost
La Jolla runs to big glass. Picture windows over 50 inches are the norm rather than the exception here, and that changes the price: $85 to re-screen an oversized frame against $65 for a standard one, $119 to build a new oversized screen against $89. It is worth knowing before you call so the number isn’t a surprise.
Mid-century and modern homes around the Muirlands and Mount Soledad often have window shapes that no stock screen has ever fitted. Everything we build is measured on site and cut to the opening, which is the only way those work.
Bluff exposure and marine layer
Homes along the bluffs and in Bird Rock take salt spray and a marine layer that keeps everything damp most mornings. Aluminum frames pit, and the coating on standard mesh breaks down. If your frame is straight, a $65 re-screen restores it. If the frame has begun to powder at the corners, new mesh will not hold and a new screen is the honest recommendation.
Further inland — the Village, Hidden Valley, the canyon streets — corrosion is far less of an issue and screens tend to last as long as they would anywhere.
Canyon lots and what lives in them
La Jolla’s canyon-backed properties get insects small enough to walk straight through standard fiberglass. Fine no-see-um mesh is a $30 upgrade per window screen and is usually the answer for anyone who has given up and started keeping the windows shut.
What we see most in La Jolla
- Oversized screens nobody wants to replace. They are expensive at a glass shop and awkward to transport. We build them on site, so nothing leaves your property.
- Sliding screen doors onto decks and patios. Salt and sand seize the rollers. The $159 screen door service covers new mesh, cleaned rollers and track, and a height adjustment.
- Screens removed years ago and never replaced. Common in view homes. If you want them back without losing the view, ask about the lightest mesh that will do the job.
- Rental and second-home turnovers. We do whole-house sets in one visit and invoice the owner or property manager directly.

What it costs
Re-screening an existing window screen is $45 for a small screen under 15 inches, $65 standard and $85 for anything over 50 inches. A new screen built and installed is $59 small, $89 standard, $119 XL, and $169 for a casement with a lip frame. Sliding screen door service is $159; a new sliding screen door starts at $395. Mesh upgrades — pet-resistant, solar or fine no-see-um — are $30 per window screen and $60 per screen door. Our minimum service call is $159 and it is applied to the work, so three or more screens puts you past the minimum and paying only for the job.

La Jolla questions we get
Will a new screen ruin my ocean view?
It changes it, and how much depends entirely on the mesh. Standard fiberglass is the least visible of the common meshes; solar and fine no-see-um both read darker from inside. Tell us which room and which direction it faces and we will recommend the lightest mesh that solves the problem rather than the heaviest one available.
Why are my screens more expensive than my neighbour’s?
Size. Anything over 50 inches is $85 to re-screen and $119 to build new, against $65 and $89 for standard. La Jolla has a lot of oversized glass, so more screens fall into the larger bracket here than almost anywhere else we work.
Do screens corrode faster near the bluffs?
On the ocean side, yes. Salt spray and the marine layer pit aluminum frames and break down mesh coating. A few streets inland it stops being a factor. We will tell you which of your screens are worth re-screening and which need rebuilding.
Can you build a screen for an unusual window shape?
Yes — everything is measured on site and cut to the opening. That is the standard approach for the mid-century and modern homes around the Muirlands where no stock size has ever fitted.
