Carlsbad’s salt air is hard on aluminum frames. A screen that spends most of its time rolled out of the weather holds up better than one that does not.

Salt Air Is Hard on Aluminum Frames
Carlsbad sits right on the coast, and the same salt air that makes the mornings smell like the ocean is steadily working on every aluminum frame near a door or window, especially anything facing west toward the water. Over enough years that shows up as corroded metal around the track and frame, not just surface discoloration — and a screen, retractable or conventional, is only as good as the frame it is attached to. It is not just beachfront properties either; salt air travels inland further than most people expect, so frames a few blocks back can show the same wear over time, just on a slower schedule than the ones facing the water directly.
If There Is Any Corrosion, We Recommend Replacing the Frame Too
Our rule on this is simple: if there is any corrosion in the frame at all, we recommend replacing the frame as well. Fastening a new screen — Phantom or conventional — to a frame that is already corroding just means doing the work twice — once now, and again when the frame finally gives out. We will tell you straight at the measure visit if that is what we are seeing, and put it in the written estimate before anything gets ordered, so there are no surprises once the build is already underway.
Rolled Away Beats Left Out in the Weather
A conventional aluminum screen door sits out in the weather twelve months a year, salt air included, whether it gets used that day or not. A Phantom retractable screen spends most of its time rolled into a slim housing at the edge of the frame, out of direct exposure to the sun and salt, and only comes out across the opening when you actually pull it across. That does not make the frame maintenance-free, but it is less metal sitting in the salt air around the clock, which matters over the years you plan to own the house.
What it costs
We publish our Phantom prices instead of making you sit through an appointment to hear one. A Phantom Legacy single door is $795 installed on an opening up to 48 inches wide. A double Phantom — two units meeting in the middle, which is what most French door and patio openings take — is $1,495 installed on an opening up to 96 inches. Phantom XL for wide multi-panel openings up to 15 feet, and motorized patio screens up to 40 feet, are quoted after we measure, because those openings vary too much to price off a chart. Service or repair on a retractable door already in place is $195 plus parts. Those are installed prices, not the cost of a unit shipped to your door. Phantom warranties every part of the unit except the mesh, and we warranty our labor for one year. See every Phantom model and price.
Getting One Installed
The measure visit itself is usually within a few days of booking, and we will check the frame for corrosion while we are there. A standard-color single or double door is typically ready in about a week after that, an XL opening in about four weeks, and a special color order in about eight weeks. If a frame needs replacing first, factor that into the schedule as well, since it is worth doing right rather than rushing a screen onto a frame that will not hold it. For comparison, a standard sliding screen door service runs $159 and a new conventional sliding door runs $395 to $595 — a Phantom door is a different, made-to-order product built for your opening. We cover Carlsbad and the rest of San Diego County every week; call (619) 330-5221 to book.
What happens when you call
- Book a measure visit — we will check the frame for corrosion while we are there.
- If corrosion is present, we will walk you through replacing the frame along with the screen.
- Install follows the standard timeline: about a week for standard color, longer for XL or special color.

Carlsbad Phantom Screen Door FAQs
Will a Phantom screen hold up against salt air?
The mesh and housing are built for outdoor use, but the bigger factor is the frame it is attached to. If that frame is already corroding, no screen on top of it — retractable or conventional — is going to hold up well.
What if there is already corrosion on our frame?
We will tell you at the measure visit — our rule is that if there is any corrosion in the frame at all, we recommend replacing the frame as well. It costs more up front than ignoring it, but it means the new screen actually has something solid to attach to.
Is this better than a regular aluminum screen door out here?
For a lot of Carlsbad openings, yes, because a Phantom screen spends most of its time rolled away instead of sitting in the salt air. It is not maintenance-free, but there is less metal exposed around the clock.
Can you still service it after it is installed?
Yes — we work on screens across Carlsbad and the rest of San Diego County every week, so the crew that installs your Phantom door is the one you would call back for service.
How much does it cost?
Our Phantom prices are published rather than held back for an appointment: $795 installed for a single door up to 48 inches, $1,495 for a double up to 96 inches, and a quote after measuring for anything wider. The measure visit confirms the width, the model and the fit — it is not where you first hear a number.
