Solar mesh is a heavier, darker screen fabric that blocks about 80% of the sun’s heat and glare before it reaches your glass, so the room behind it runs cooler and your furniture and flooring fade slower. It’s a flat $30 upgrade per screen, added the moment we’re already re-screening or building you a new one — not a separate project.
Ask for solar mesh next time we’re out for a re-screen — it’s a $30 add, not a new job.

What solar mesh actually does
Solar mesh is woven denser and darker than the standard fiberglass or aluminum screen most houses have. That extra density is what does the work: it blocks about 80% of the sun’s heat and glare before it ever gets to the glass, instead of letting the window do all the blocking.
Practically, that means the room behind a solar screen runs cooler in the afternoon, the glare off a TV or monitor drops, and carpet, hardwood, and furniture fade more slowly because they’re taking less direct sun. On a window that takes the afternoon sun, the difference is one you feel in the room rather than one you have to be told about.
The trade-off, stated plainly
Solar mesh isn’t free of downsides, and we’ll tell you the same thing at your door that we’re telling you here. It’s darker to look through than a standard screen, it cuts some of the daylight coming into the room, and at night, with your lights on inside, you’ll see less of the yard through it than you would through regular mesh.
That’s exactly why it’s worth it on the hot side of the house and often not worth it on the shaded side. A north-facing window that never gets direct sun doesn’t need it — you’d just be trading away daylight for nothing. Our usual advice is to put solar mesh on the west- and south-facing windows that actually take the afternoon beating, and leave the rest as standard screen. It’s the honest call, and it also keeps the job affordable. Solar is one of a few mesh upgrades we offer at this same flat rate — if pets are the bigger issue at your house, pet-resistant mesh is priced the same way.
Where it earns its keep in San Diego County
Sun damage isn’t even across the county. Inland and east-county heat does more damage to a screen — and to a room — than the marine air along the coast does. In El Cajon, Santee, Spring Valley, La Mesa, and the eastern edge of Chula Vista, we regularly see south- and west-facing screens go chalky and tear when you press on them, while the north side of the same house still looks nearly new. That’s the pattern solar mesh is built for: a west-facing room that’s hard to sit in by 4 p.m. is exactly where the upgrade earns its keep. Along the coast, where the temperature swing is smaller, it matters a lot less, and plenty of coastal customers skip it entirely.
The easiest time to add it: when you’re already re-screening
Solar mesh adds a flat $30 per window screen and $60 per screen door on top of whatever base service you’re getting — re-screening an existing frame, a new screen built from scratch, or a sliding screen door. See full pricing for the base rates. The moment to decide is when a screen already needs new mesh, because you’re paying for the labor either way — the upgrade is just the mesh itself. Waiting until later means paying for a second visit instead of a $30 line item on the one you’ve already scheduled.
What happens on the visit
We’re a mobile outfit — the van comes to you, and most jobs are measured, built and installed in one visit. We set every screen with spline, never staples, so it holds up to being pulled out and cleaned without popping loose. Hablamos español. If you’d rather talk it through first, call (619) 330-5221.
Our one-year labor warranty
We warranty our labor for one year. If a screen we set comes loose or the fit is off, we come back and fix it at no charge. That warranty covers our work, not the mesh or frame against later damage — a frame bent in a fall is not a labor issue, and we will say so plainly if that is what we are looking at.
We warranty our labor for one year.
What happens when you call
- Call or text and tell us which rooms get hot in the afternoon — that is usually the whole brief.
- We measure every screen you are considering and talk through which windows are worth the upgrade.
- We build the screens with solar mesh, spline-set, on site the same visit in most cases.
- We fit them and you check every one before we leave.
What neighbors say
“Oscar did a fantastic job replacing my screens and rusted-out window hardware! I’ve been trying to find someone for several years to come to my house and replace old screens, as my windows themselves were fine. It was great because he came and made the screens right on site. He’s very professional and works quietly and neatly. The pricing was fair and the quality of the screens is excellent!”

Solar Screen Questions We Get at the Door
What exactly is solar mesh?
It’s a denser, darker screen fabric than standard fiberglass or aluminum mesh. The extra density blocks about 80% of the sun’s heat and glare before it reaches the glass, which keeps the room behind it cooler and slows fading on furniture and floors.
Will solar screens make my house feel dark inside?
They cut more daylight than a standard screen, and at night with your lights on you’ll see less of the outside through them. That’s the trade for the heat and glare they block, which is why we usually suggest them only for the windows that actually take direct sun.
Do I need solar mesh on every window?
No. We recommend it for west- and south-facing windows that get hit hardest in the afternoon, and standard mesh for shaded or north-facing windows, where solar mesh mostly just costs you daylight for no real benefit.
How much does solar mesh cost?
It’s a flat $30 per window screen and $60 per screen door, added on top of the base re-screen, new-screen, or screen door price. Re-screening a frame runs $45 to $85 by size and a new screen with frame runs $59 to $169.
Can I add solar mesh when I’m just getting an existing screen repaired?
Yes — that’s the easiest time to do it. Since we’re already re-screening the frame, the solar upgrade is just the $30 mesh charge on top of that visit.
Is solar mesh covered by your warranty?
Our one-year warranty covers the labor on how the screen is set, not the mesh or frame against damage that happens afterward, like a hard slam or impact.
We measure, build and install most jobs the same visit, spline-set and backed by our one-year labor warranty.
